Mykola Tomenko took part in the Action of saving the Memorial 200-year-old Mulberry Tree of Taras Shevchenko
Today, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, took part in the action of saving the memorial 200-year-old mulberry tree of Taras Shevchenko in the territory of the Literary-Memorial Estate of Taras Shevchenko in the center of Kyiv, near Maidan Nezalezhnosti square.
Mykola Tomenko reminded that Taras Shevchenko had lived in the building of the present-day Literary-Memorial Estate in spring 1846. His workshop is still preserved on the second floor. The Estate displays numerous memorial items that used to be at poet´s disposal.
A 200-year-old mulberry tree of Taras Shevchenko is growing in a small yard near the estate, and its state is, unfortunately, not very flattering. Thus, an urgent help is necessary. The tree was treated by the leading specialists of Kyiv environmental-cultural center. The director of Kyiv environmental-cultural center Volodymyr Boreiko declared that the center was collecting all the necessary documents to announce this tree a botanic memorial of the nature. Treatment of the tree was assisted by Mykola Tomenko Fund "Ridna Kraina."
"I believe that the mission of Taras Shevchenko´s estate and the mulberry tree should be no less important than the mission of our great historical-artistic objects", Mykola Tomenko stated, after the works were completed. "Today, in the center of de-jure Ukrainian capital there are no territories with such Ukrainian spirit and traditions, thus, we should exert efforts to preserve it", Mykola Tomenko concluded.
